Kintsugi Thorn Spindle I - Natural Italian Walnut

Kintsugi Thorn Spindle I - Natural Italian Walnut

$65.00

This is a new spindle design that I came up with.
It has roots in the Phang spindle definitely, but it also has some of the aesthetics of the italian drop spindle.
Both sides are pointy, which made me think of a thorn, hence the name.
From my experience, it is a little faster than my phangs. I of course recommend building your cop on the spindle belly for the better balance.

I carved a crack in the wood surface and filled it with 24 carats gold leaf. A hint to Kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with gold, and a message for us all…to learn to wrap our flaws and little broken pieces in love, because they make us unique.

I also decided to work with some blanks of wood that had “faults” to start with. In this case, a lot of bug bites that run through the spindle. I enhanced the surrounding areas with gold dust. The spindle is structurally solid, but check the detail pics to make sure it’s your cup of tea!
